The fife and drums were a communication system and had songs called “duty calls” for all the actions of the day like waking up, a call to eat and to go to sleep. There was a specific song heard across the field to alert of the if there was a surprise attack, to cease fire, even a song to surrender and to pause to carry the wounded off the field. They wore red to separate them from actual soldiers. Was ignorant to how much of a roll they played in battle and day to day tasks.
